Research Areas
Current Projects
Transportation Resources at PSU
Miguel's research areas and work has been mostly related to:
- Pricing and auctions in trucking and freight
- Urban distribution systems and the impact of congestion of urban commercial vehicle movements
- Freight data collection issues in urban areas using GPS - data collection issues in congested urban areas
- Vehicle routing in dynamic and time dependent environments
- International freight movements and the determination of freight volumes and freight corridors
- The impact of freight and larger container ships on highway infrastructure
- The study and evaluation of transport related supply chain disruptions
He has began research on the environmental impacts and sustainability of freight transportation and supply chains.
Miguel's consulting and private practice in the freight/logistics area has been related to trucking operations and optimization of routes and distribution areas/zones.
Current funded projects include:
- The usage of GPS truck data to evaluate and develop freight corridor performance measures
- The study of climate change impacts on transportation infrastructure
- Green fleet replacement models
- Bus "bunching" mimization in public transportation operations
- The impact of congestion on vehicle routing
- The development of algorithms for the time-dependent-stochastic routing
- Statewide freight modeling improvements
- The development of volume –speed functions for traffic assignment models
- The impact of traffic flows on emissions.

Research Assistant (RA) Positions Available
For Graduate(s)/Undergraduate(s)
Current or prospective PSU students interested in transportation /freight/logistics research with strong quantitative and communication skills (both oral and written) are invited to apply for research assistant positions. The positions are available with tuition remission and up to 20 paid hours per week. Casual positions (hourly basis) may also be available.
To be considered for a Research Assistanship please apply to the Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) deparment. If you are not a current PSU student you will need to apply for a graduate degree to qualify for a RA. For information related to the application process for graduate degrees in CEE click here.
For additional RA opportunities you can also visit the websites of CEE colleagues Rob Bertini and Chris Monsere.
