ME 491 Conceptual Design Report due on 29 November 2017

NOTE: The due date was pushed back to 29 November 2017.

Item 3 in the assignment has been updated to reflect the due date.

Using the document submitted for the Prototype Report as a draft, create a brief report to summarize the conceptual design and current state of your device for the design competition.

The report is a brief, three-page maximum (excluding appendices) summary of the design concept. The report should include

  1. A one- or two-paragraph description of the key mechanisms and strategy used in the system. What is the primary (current) conceptual plan for moving the minifigure? The strategy should clearly state how your team plans to maximize the points earned in the design competition. For example, are you going to emphasize speed without worrying about weight? What is your a strategy for automation?

  2. New: A brief (one-page maximum) description of the conceptual design. Include a photograph of the current device.

  3. A list of the key remaining challenges or engineering tasks that the group needs to complete before the day of the design competition.

Since the report due date was pushed back to the day after the competition, the original assignment does not make sense. Change this item to a list of features (capabilities) and performance measures that the group was not able to achieve by the time of the competition. For each feature or performance measure not realized, briefly describe what you would do to add that feature or performance measure and estimate how long (say in number of weeks) it would take you to implement those features or to achieve the desired performance measure.

  4. Roles and contributions of team members

    • List the project assignments for each team member
    • List the key accomplishments/contributions of each team member
  5. An appendix that includes

    • A detailed schematic of the functional decomposition of your device
    • NEW: Photographs of key subsystems or components developed by the team.
    • Hand sketches of key subsystems
    • Data from prototype experiments
    • NEW: Decision matrices and other semi-analytical methods used in concept selection.

Submit one copy (per team) of the report to the D2L drop box
