Multi-Media Tech Transfer

The fruits of research will rot unless disseminated and put into practice. Shown below are demo examples of multi-media CDs for which PSU has an emerging national reputation. The geotechnical program is building a digital library for the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). Soil and rock support technologies including ground anchors, soil nails, and rock slope catchment design, and the ESA in construction are some of the CD topics completed. The range of advanced digital techniques include: Animation, Expert Speaks, Narrated Images, Interactive Navigation and Self Assessment formats.

Some demo links below require browser plug-ins and some are large files that may require extra time to load.

This CD introduces Western Federal Lands - Highway Division (WFL-HD) inspectors to ground anchor and soil nail technologies and assists in training field personnel new to the field. Digital multimedia technologies enable the user to explore the basics of ground anchors, the relationship between ground anchors and soil nails, and the essentials of inspecting ground anchors. A full reference is found here: Multi-Media Review of Soil Nails and Ground Anchors from a CD, ADSC, Drilled Shaft Magazine, May 2003.

This double CD provides the advanced education for inspectors and engineers in all aspects of ground anchor installation. The first CD in the pack, titled 'Preconstruction', provides the information before construction begins, while the second, titled 'During Construction,' details QA/QC, documents & forms, monitoring, and load testing.

This double CD is designed to cover all the pertinent details for Soil Nail Wall Inspecton and includes a short introduction to design, as well as self assessment questions. In a similar format to the Ground Anchor CD, the first disk covers preconstruction topics and the second disk the construction activities. This disk also includes emphasis on shotcrete application, online features and special MacroMedia® techniques to assist those viewers with disabilities.

This double CD provides an explanation of key elements of the Endangered Species Act (ESA) related to highway construction. Disk 1 contains an introduction to ESA and explains compliance with ESA, and a review of duties an agency has under the ESA. Disk 2 shows how to construct to the requirements of ESA, contains 2 case histories, and additional resources.

Some US highways are susceptible to rockfall: closing highways, delaying traffic and adding $M’s to freight costs. ODOT’s rockfall research guide helps determine the width of catchment ditch. Bulky paper technical reports and graphs make it hard to put into routine use the RCAD research. The geotech team distilled the work from the original data curve, fitted all 127 empirical plots to 10th order polynomial functions, and packed the full research results into a simple design software package. The disk contains both the software and a fully narrated enhanced PowerPoint® for a ‘Course on a CD'.

Now, let’s go fix rock slopes!
