Results of the Improving Class Brainstorm
We brainstormed how we could improve the class this quarter.
The class broke into 6 groups. Each group came up with 3-5
ideas and reported back to the class.
The ideas were broken into two groups: 1) Things the staff
could do, and 2) Things the students could do. Here is a compilation
of the results.
Things the staff could do
- Work more with computers, take advantage of technology.
- Tie mentor session and class together more tightly.
- More small group activities.
- Assignments explained better.
- Long range planning - Let everyone know when big projects are due.
- Feedback on papers.
- Snacks in class.
- Extra Credit.
- Divide time between students fairly in both class and mentor sessions.
- Supply and use a grading rubric.
- Choose more interesting books and readings.
- Continue to give feedback on writings.
- Study some poetry
Things the students could do
- Bring required materials and assignments to class when they are due.
- Listen more.
- Speak up, ask clarifying questions, be more verbal.
- Come to class prepared (especially the assigned readings).
- Less smart-alec comments, be thoughtful.
