We brainstormed how we could improve the class this quarter. The class broke into 6 groups. Each group came up with 3-5 ideas and reported back to the class. The ideas were broken into two groups: 1) Things the staff could do, and 2) Things the students could do. Here is a compilation of the results.

Things the staff could do

• Work more with computers, take advantage of technology.
• Tie mentor session and class together more tightly.
• More small group activities.
• Assignments explained better.
• Long range planning - Let everyone know when big projects are due.
• Feedback on papers.
• Snacks in class.
• Extra Credit.
• Divide time between students fairly in both class and mentor sessions.
• Supply and use a grading rubric.
• Choose more interesting books and readings.
• Continue to give feedback on writings.
• Study some poetry

Things the students could do

• Bring required materials and assignments to class when they are due.
• Listen more.
• Speak up, ask clarifying questions, be more verbal.
• Come to class prepared (especially the assigned readings).
• Less smart-alec comments, be thoughtful.
