Jim Binkley

I am a network engineer, researcher, and teacher in the Portland State University Computer Science department.

I can be contacted via email at jrb@cs.pdx.edu.

Background Information

I have a M.S. degree in Computer Science from Washington State University. In the past three decades I've worked at Tektronix, Intel, the Oregon Graduate Institute, and at Portland State University on various networking and operating system software projects. My current interests include network management and network security, TCP/IP-based protocol design, routing theory and practice, and mobile networking.

PSU/CS classes

You should be able to find an ASCII text syllabus and other information for classes listed below. Times for classes during the 2004/2005 school year are shown. If a time is not shown, it means I have taught the class in the past but may or may not teach it again in the future. The syllabus is only up to date if the class is currently being taught, else it represents the last time the class was taught. If you are interested in a class, please look at the syllabus. The TCP/IP class, Routing, and Network Security classes have lecture slides on-line. Other classes may or may not have slides. You may either click through the slides or download a pdf version of the lecture and print it.

Research Interests

My research interests include network security, routing, and network management.

Currently a number of collaborators at OHSU, and PSU are working on a number of Portland MAN network projects including a layer 3 presence that includes an Internet2 connection and a layer 2 exchange. The layer 3 presence is called PREN (for Portland Regional and Educational Network). This project hopes to directly tie together local Portland universities with high-speed networking, and also hopes to tie those universities to Internet2 sites elsewhere. Our layer 2 exchange at the Pittock building and recently extended with fiber to Easystreet and Fortix is called NWAX for Northwest Area Exchange. This is an Ethernet-based MAN.

In the recent past at Portland State University, DARPA funded a project at PSU with the focus on mobile security. Please see the Secure Mobile Networking project link for more information. We have developed and deployed a version of Mobile-IP for FreeBSD.

PSU as a university and the Computer Science department have been given a 3 year certification by the NSA as a Center for Academic Excellance in Computer Science. Please see the following web page for information: PSU CIA .

In collaboration with Sysgroup, Janaka Jayawardena, CECS Directory of Computing Systems, and David Burns, CECS Network Manager, we have established a network lab in the Computer Science department. The network lab exists for research and training in networking. For more information on the lab, please see: CECS netlab. As an example of "netlab" work, please see our Computer Action Team web page that shows the open-source ourmon system at ourmon . This page shows recent activity on PSU's core DMZ network. The latest open-source release of ourmon can be downloaded as well.

We also have a general web page for the College of Engineering's network. Please see:

CECS network page .

Network lab projects currently include ourmon based network visualization projects, network driver development, and wireless mobility research.
