Computer Games: Heartbeats from Extinction
Heartbeats from Extinction
It is 235 years after the original alien infestation on LV 426. In recent days another, larger outbreak has occurred, this time covering multiple planets and spreading rapidly. Only a few of those in power know the extent of the infestation, but they fear for the end of mankind. On the outskirts of our universe, a last-ditch effort was secretly set up to find a way to destroy the aliens. The greatest scientists of the time were assembled to research weapons of destruction in a small base on an otherwise uninhabited planet. Development was nearing completion when an experiment gone awry caused the base itself, the last hope of mankind, to become infested. Automatic security locked down the base, and launched self-destruct mode. No survivors escaped. The political powers of the time readied themselves for the annihilation of mankind, and the attempt was forgotten...

One month later:

A security guard on the base awakens from his impregnation coma to find he can pull himself free. He grabs components to build a communications device and heads up to the roof. There he manages to make contact with a tourist island on the only other planet in the system. In a bit of quick thinking, and knowing he has only moments left to live, he activates an emergency android from the medical center and drags him to the roof to take over. So it is that the police force on another planet get an early-morning call from a supposedly demolished base by an android who doesn't have a clue what is going on: you.

The tasks of the game will be as follows: stop the self-destruct mode (temporarily disabled by the loss of power), turn the power on, get the impregnation "cure", get the gas grenade chemical, get genetic structure for alter-ego alien, turn communications on and send genetic structure, and turn self-destruct back on.

This brief overview does not do the plot justice. It started out as a DOOM-like game, with bit of a plot. Since then the plot has grown to something more worthy of a movie, except that it has a lot of parts that make sense as being interactive. Too many interesting twists and turns in this game to describe. For examples: cybernetic aliens, aliens that eat other aliens (called alter-ego aliens), and genetically enhanced aliens (the "crowd control" model) that have red bodies, golden hair, insect-like wings, and stinging tails that induce paralysis. (Rev. 9:7 anyone?)

The finale (which is still what I think is one of the most important parts of any game - it's the part that always sticks with you.) would be a movie of the events before the game, then clips of your actions in the base intermixed with the research being done by the police force, and then the aftermath. My hope is that there will be roughly a two-hour movie as your reward for beating the game. This will be especially cool, because several part of the movie will be watching your actions. Even if you don't win, their will be other, shorter movies for alternative endings. The further you make it, the longer the movie, and the more you get to see of the larger story.

The Complex:

This is a sketch of the complex most of the story takes place in. The atmosphere of the planet is unbreathable, thus most of the complex is connected together by a series of enclosed sky bridges and tunnels. There is one main, center building (the upper right in the sketch) surrounded by several smaller facilities. The hangar is to the lower right on the overhead sketch. It was destroyed during the outbreak. The game starts at the room with the lights on in the main building.
