Software Installation Assignment
This is an individual assignment. Each group member must do this
assignment and turn it in themselves. However, this work must be
coordinated with your group to make sure you are working on different
packages in a consistent fashion.
-
Locate a piece of public domain/free/GNU software that would
improve your system by being installed.
(A list of packages and installation difficulty
is available to help in this decision.
-
Go get the software from an ftp archive site.
-
Compile and install the software in the proper place on your system.
Mail the following to blajmi
:
- The name/purpose of the software you selected.
- The archive site you got it from.
- The output from "make all" and "make install" (or equivalent)
- A paragraph which explains why you feel this software will
improve your system.
- For possible extra credit, write a brief review of the software;
How good/useful the software is, how hard it was to compile/install, &c.
This may be used for future classes.
Note that these last two are distinctly different,
the former is your justification for choosing this software,
the latter is a summary of your experience with it.
