Coursework Requirements

(Also proficiency in computer language and statistics is required.)

* ESR/CE Ph.D. committee is composed of Dr. Wells and Dr. Li for the year 1995-1997

Examination and Committee Schedule

  • Initial meeting with ESR/CE Ph.D. committee

-schedule qualifying examination (if applicable and determine examination content)

-inform student of upcoming requirements

-review 1st quarter's coursework

-review student's research interests

-schedule next meeting with ESR/CE committee

within 1st quarter of admission
  • Qualifying examination (if applicable: undergraduate GPA or graduate GPA less than 3.0 and 3.5, respectively)
at the end of the 1st quarter of admission

  • Meeting with ESR/CE PhD committee

-list of all courses taken and proposal for courses to be taken

-proposal of major and minor areas for comprehensive examinations (defining the student's area of concentration)

-committee approval or revision of coursework and major/minor areas proposal

-schedule date of meeting with ESR committee for finalizing comprehensive examination format and schedule

usually at end of 1st quarter of admission
  • Comprehensive examination

-written examination in major and minor areas of expertise

-oral examination (if applicable)

at end of coursework defined in major and minor areas for comprehensive examination

  • Formulation of the ESR Ph.D. committee of 5 members
  • Advancement to Candidacy Examination

-preparation of research plan and oral presentation of research plan

-committee approval or revision of research plan

(at this point the student becomes a Ph.D. candidate)

after Comprehensive Examination
  • Final Examination

-oral examination based on defense of the Ph.D. dissertation

Minimum of 1 year after comprehensive examination
