Aside: Ranked data and quantiles (or percentiles)

• Resistant measures typically depend upon particular quantiles of the data set

• Quantiles are the values associated with estimates of the non-exceedance probability - XP indicates the value of X associated with probability P

• Examples:

  • X.25 and X.75 are the lower and upper quartiles
  • X.50 is the “middle” value (the median)
