Department of Electrical Engineering
Financial Aid Information

A limited number of graduate assistantships are available to well qualified applicants at both the M.S. and Ph.D. level. Teaching Assistantships are used to support the instructional programs in the department. Normally, however, the department will not award teaching assistantships to graduate candidates before they have completed at least one quarter of EE course work at PSU. Chances improve as a student establishes strong GPA credentials in EE classes, but few graduate students receive support during their first year.

Research assistantships to support specific research programs are assigned by the principal investigator of the project. Candidates are often selected from the general applicant pool. Admissions as a regular student and good academic standing are prerequisites for receiving an assistantship.

U.S. citizens and residents may receive consideration for financial assistance through the National Direct Student Loan, College Work-Study, the Guaranteed Federal Insured Student Loan Program, and the PLUS Program. More information can be obtained from the Portland State University Financial Aid Office. Unfortunately, there is no financial assistance of this type available for International Students.

Foreign (non-US) applicants must demonstrate that they have sufficient funds available to support themselves for one year in the United States before the Admissions Office of Portland State University will issue an I-20 (Certificate of Eligibility for Non-Immigrant Student Status). Currently this level is set at $17,900 US.

Other forms of financial assistance are available.
