These pictures document an aborted attempt to circumnavigate the Channel Islands National Marine Preserve (Santa Barbara Unit) in September 2008. An extended period of strong winds forced us to turn around and abandon our crossing from the mainland. Instead we took the ferry out to Santa Cruz Island the next day. Continued windy weather kept us on Santa Cruz Island doing day trips and hikes for the remainder of our time window. So much for the circumnavigation! Nevertheless, it was a beautiful place to be stuck. Maybe we'll have better luck with the weather next time. I'd love to see more. The paddlers on this trip were Jonathan Walpole and Sandy Giltinan. Many thanks to Jen Kleck of Aqua Adventures in San Diego for the loan of a boat and other equipment!
