About this page

This page is a "GET" proxy for WordNet Online. WordNet is a thesaurus (alternatively, a lexical database).

I developed this proxy so WordNet Online can be added as a search provider in MS Internet Explorer 7 (IE 7). IE 7 allows use of many search providers, but requires that each provider use the "GET" method to initiate a search. (See http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/searchguide/en-en/default.mspx for details). However, WordNet Online uses the "POST" method for searches. Hence, this proxy.

Using this proxy as an IE 7 search provider

Type in the following URL in the URL box of the "Add Search Providers" page of IE 7:

http://web.cecs.pdx.edu/~smurthy/wn.html?q=TEST

If this URL does not work, the process of integrating search providers into IE has likely changed. Send me a note (smurthy at cs period pdx period edu) so I can update the proxy.

Using this proxy manually

Please use WordNet Online directly, if you do not need to use the "GET" method to search WordNet. However, if you must use this proxy manually, use a URL of this format:

http://web.cecs.pdx.edu/~smurthy/wn.html?q=escaped%20search%20term

Where escaped%20search%20term is the search term in escaped form. The rest of the URL is required. Here is an example URL to search for the term "Labor of Love":

http://web.cecs.pdx.edu/~smurthy/wn.html?q=Labor%20of%20Love
