Objective

The Mobile Networking Lab is developing new power-efficient protocols to support mobile hosts in ad hoc mobile networks. Specifically, we are developing protocols for:

Energy-efficient MAC layer protocols for multi-hop wireless networks. Our protocol called PAMAS consumes between 15% and 70% less energy while delivering throughput similar to other protocols. The implication is that a mobile computer's battery will last significantly longer.

Power-aware routing protocols for ad hoc networks. We are extending the energy saving idea to make routing protocols energy-aware.

Network layer support for QoS.

Developing transport layer support for QoS (Quality of Service) for multimedia data transmitted over ad hoc networks.

We have developed a complete network management protocol for ad hoc networks. The protocol (called ANMP) has low message overhead while ensuring that almost all the nodes are managed (a node is unmanaged for breif periods when it moves).

Humor in ad hoc networking!
