All you need to be able to do is send email to the internet. If you can send email to archie@archie.sura.net, or archie@archie.unl.edu, then you can do archie searches via email. Exactly how you write and send the email depends on your local email software, and your local site--if you don't know how to send email you will need to ask your local computer administrator.
Here is an email that will find any programs with the (case insensitive) substring "netrek" inside. Then it will print out a one-sentence description of what netrek is (if the description exists on the server).
To: archie@archie.ee.pdx.edu ------- set search sub find netrek whatis netrek
Note that the "set search sub" sets the search type to case-insensitive substring. Although this is the default, some archie-site administrators may change the default search type.
Here is an email which asks the archie server to send instructions on how to use archie.
To: archie@archie.ee.pdx.edu ------- help
