News of AEWG-46 Conference Events

May 28, 2003

Email address correction: Unfortunately there was an incorrect email address in the registration form.  The correct email address for Joni Bauman is joni@pdx.edu

A corrected registration form can be found online at:

Call for Abstracts:

The deadline (this is more of a target date, I will be flexible if you keep me informed) for abstracts has been extended to Monday, June 16, 2003.  I would still like to know by Monday, June 2 if you are planning on submitting an abstract.  PLEASE CONTACT ME regarding paper submissions. A short email would be fine (nordsr@pdx.edu) My cell phone number is (503) 341-2363, remember I am on Pacific Time.

Abstracts should be sent to the technical program:

By email:  (nordsr@pdx.edu).

By FAX:  (503) 725-8255 attention AEWG

They can also be mailed

I will be sending a confirmation for all abstracts sent in by email.  For all abstracts received by May 30th, I will send confirmation out on June 2nd; for those that are sent in by the June 16, expect a confirmation to be sent out on June 18th. Please look for the receipt, I would hate for any of the valuable contributions to AEWG-46 to be lost in cyberspace.

AEWG Student Award:

The first AEWG Student Award is now being judged. The turnout was good; five entries were submitted.

There are a lot of details for running the AEWG Student Award that I have filled in over the course of this years competition. In addition to documenting this year's procedure, I will be making recommendations on how to better prepare for future competitions. Both are topics for the AEWG business meeting. To help keep the business meeting on a reasonable time schedule, I am requesting if you are interested and willing to review my recommendations and comment on these before the AEWG meeting, please send me an email stating "I would like to review the AEWG Student Award Recommendations" to me (nordsr@pdx.edu).

AEWG-46 Primer:

The AEWG-46 conference primer will be held on Monday, Aug 4, 2003. The lecturers scheduled for the primer will be Marvin Hamstad, Stuart McBride, David Prine and H. Reginald Hardy and will be held in a video conferencing classroom connected to a web-broadcast capable production studio. The pre-conference example lecture experience live problems, but can be viewed on the AEWG conference website.

Social Events:

"Willamette Star" cruise ship to be used for the award banquet:

This ship has enough space so that you can hold hands with your sweetheart.  There is a capacity for 100 for dinner on the main deck with extra room upstairs with bar and open deck.  This is truly a sweetheart friendly AEWG.

A reminder that Donna will be hosting an Icebreaker for conference guests on Morning of Tuesday, Aug 5 (while the rest of us are at the conference).

Post Conference Excursion.

For Thursday, Aug 7. We have enough interest in trying to put together an after conference excursion. The excursion would consist of exclusively AEWG participants traveling through the Columbia River Gorge (this is a beautiful river valley including some steep rock formations).  Stops at Multnomah Falls, Hood River (popular with wind surfers), perhaps Bonneville Dam and of course beautiful Mt. Hood (Timberline Lodge) are planned. This excursion will likely take 8 hours. The cost (excluding meals) will be approximately $60 per person. There are restaurants at the stops. Donna will need to know a couple of weeks before the conference. You can indicate this on your conference registration form or contact Donna directly.

For more information on the social program, please contact Donna Koch directly:  donna@cecs.pdx.edu, (503) 260-7686, (503) 452-8529 (email preferred).
