%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Message 1 I can't seem to run netscape from Shabi: netscape: program is version 2.0, but resources are version 2.0b2. This means that there is an inappropriate `Netscape' file installed in the app-defaults directory. Please respond briefly to Vicki with: 1. What skills are absolutely needed to make a support person useful to you. Keep in mind this person will be supporting research...the CAT will take care of teaching needs, as usual. Respond in terms of operating systems, software familiarity, etc. 2. What skills would be highly desirable but not absolutely necessary? %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Message 3 I have posted my office hours on my homepage. Currently, they will be Thursdays from 12-2pm. My plan is that during this time, I will be available for students from either class. If this becomes problematic, I will revise my office hours as needed. Please let me know if these proposed office hours poses a problem for either of you. - David Guy %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Message 4 Yes, Melanie, 22 and 23 June is fine for me, and I am sure that Doyne and myself will nicely complement (we do that all the time!). Thanks for your interest and comments. All the best, Constantino %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Message 5 Sounds interesting, indeed. If you go to that talk and Jonathan is handing out copies of his slides, could you grab one copy for me? Ralf %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Message 6 Melanie - Just a quick note to stay in touch . . . We're almost done with our semester, and I'm starting to get my head above water -- a few more projects and tests to grade, and then I can start getting ready for winter term classes :-) I was glad to see you've agreed to direct the Summer School again (and hoping / assuming you'll want me back in my usual role . . .). Have you settled on a "theme" for the summer? And how is John Holland doing on organizing the China school? As always, if there are things I can do to help out, I'd be happy to do what I can. So how are things going at your new campus? I hope you're still finding it a positive move . . . Anyway, Happy Holidays! (and pass that along to your family too :-) tom %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Message 7 Friends, We are going to create a CD/DVD that can be used to bootstrap complex systems graduate schools (like SFI's own CSSS) around the world. The disks will contain readings, lecture notes, lectures, computer programs, etc., that can be given to graduate students or the directors of the schools. If you have any ideas of what shold be included in such an effort, please let me know. In particular, what papers do you think every graduate student should read in this area? (Self-citations are allowable, but other suggestions are welcome as well.) What else should be part of such a curriculum? Thanks in advance for the help, and have a great holiday. Best John %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Message 8 > but I have bumper stickers and $5 raffle tickets for my favorite > candidate for municipal judge. The week of April 5 works best for me. I would be delighted to give a talk. > What day of the week do you have this meeting scheduled, in the context of which I > should give the talk? I need to know this so that I decide the exact days of the week > for my visit. > Our talks are usually on Friday afternoons, 4-5, so if you can be here on the Friday of that week, that would be great. The ideal schedule for us would be if you could arrive Wednesday, and be here all day Thurs-Fri, leaving Sat (or Sunday if you'd like to spend an extra day seeing Portland). How would that work for you? Would it be possible for you to buy a plane ticket and for us to reimburse you later? If not, let me know and I can arrange to have the department buy a plane ticket in advance. We will make a hotel reservation for you and it will be paid in advance by the department. Melanie %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Message 11 Hi Paul, I just noticed that I spelled John Olsen's name wrong at the end of the instruction sheet -- can you correct this? Thanks! Melanie %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Message 12 Dear Melanie, I wondered if you would be able to review a relatively short paper for EC? I am fielding this in response to Marc's (fairly) recent call of despair. It is in the natural computation arena (which is indeed explicit in the EC scope!). You are one of few on the board who has explicit interest in natural computation, but I more than understand if you are too busy. I'd be looking for the review in about 4 or 5 weeks. The details about the RFA can be found below: http://grants1.nih.gov/grants/guide/rfa-files/RFA-CA-04-013.html There are two mechanisms: a P50 which is a full 5-year award with an estimated funding level of 2-3 million/year and the P20 mechanism which is a planning grant with a much smaller base (approx. 500,000 for 2-3 years). Given the expertise at CI, there are clear projects in signaling pathways with empahsis on models for transcription factors and regulation based on gene expression and sequence data. We now have some innovative ways here at OHSU to validate these models. I think the best way to approach this is in a multi-discipline approach and that this might be a great way to collaborate between OGI and the hill. Would you be interested in meeting to talk about this? I can give you more details and some ideas about possible approaches we have been discussing. I am submitting the letter of intent this week and grant is due in April. It's mid-winter break here, so the kids are out of school. It's not definite yet, but we're working on plans. Are you going to be around? Could we get the families together? -Roy. %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Message 18 Hi mm I was just sitting reading and you came into my head. What are you doing these days? I've been going back and forth between NY and Barcelona every 3 weeks for 4 years but I'm about to end it. I'll be in Barcelona full time again now. I love it there. I never had any idea what people meant when they talked about feeling "at home" somewhere until I began living in Barcelona. So I'm happy to be heading back - I miss the kids too much. Anyway, the book I'm reading is Jeanette Winterson's Written On The Body. It's great. I've read 4 or 5 of hers and mostly they're good or very good, but this is the best so far. The Passion is also really good and apparently Gut Symmetries is great but I've not read it. Not that you asked.... Bye for now, T %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Message 19 So sorry about the mix-up with the dog yesterday. Langton's "Life at the edge of chaos" in Proc. Alife II. Has it been proven that this is a second order transition? Or what evidence would be needed? Is there somebody who reproduced Langton's graphs? I would be pleased at an answer, Heiko Hamann %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Message 21 Hello! I was just going to contact you about the AdSyl meeting times. Do you still want Fridays from 10:30-12:30 pm and then the reading group on Fridays from 12:30 - 1:30 pm? You don't currently have those reservations now, but did over the last few months. If you'd like me to reserve them for you before they go to someone else, please let me know right away. Thank you! My plan is to move them tomorrow, if nobody objects. Melanie %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Message 26 Hi Melanie, Sorry to take a little while to get back to you. Erica and I have been trying to figure out the schedule. We will be meeting Wednesday until noon, but I don't think it will be too much of a problem for you to leave that morning. Of course, we'll miss having you for that day's discussion, but I understand the importance of trying to minimize travel time. I've been travelling so much lately myself and frankly it drives me a little crazy. Looking forward to seeing you in October. Let me know if you have any more questions. (If you think your research would fit better into another program here, you should contact that program leader directly. If you think it doesn't fit into any particular existing program, then contact Ellen Goldberg, President of SFI (ellen@santafe.edu). Take a look at our web page for additional information about our visitor program and other programs: http://www.santafe.edu.) Summers are hard because we have very little space and are usually very oversubscribed with visits from our own "external faculty", but I'm not sure what the situation is for this summer yet. Also, a reminder that the camera ready copy (CRC) for the symposium technical report is due January 31, 2005. AAAI requests that you submit the CRC directly to them. Instructions for formatting and submission can be found at: http://www.aaai.org/Publications/Author/electronic-submissions.html and http://www.aaai.org/Publications/Author/symposia-submissions.html Note that both pages have relevant information. Also, please note that I had been telling people to submit the CRC to our own paper submission site; this was a misunderstanding of AAAI's requirements. My apologies for any confusion. Finally, we still have some funds available for grad student travel, so let me know if you, a student, or a colleage would like to apply for these funds. With best regards, Mike Anderson %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
