Modern AI platforms such as Claude or ChatGPT can solve every problem I will assign to you (and likely every problem I can think of). However, these platforms also serve as incredibly useful tools for accelerating the learning process when used correctly. For all homework assignments this quarter, you may use AI platforms to help with your homework only when using a specified set of tutor instructions that I provide.
Download the Homework 0 files from the course webiste. Instructions for setting up the tutor on various platforms are as follows:
Gemini Gem: On the Gemini website, open Gems New Gem. Name it for this course, paste the tutor text into Instructions, and save. Optional files (such as the homework pdf or tex) go under Knowledge Add files. Start tutoring chats with that Gem.
Claude: Open Projects New Project. Name it for this course, choose Set project instructions, paste the tutor text, and save. Add course documents to project knowledge. Start tutoring chats inside that project.
ChatGPT: Create a project for your course. Add the tutor text to the project’s instructions and add permitted course documents to its sources/files. Start tutoring chats inside that project.
Other: Start an ordinary chat and paste the entire tutor text, preceded by “Please use the following course tutor instructions for this conversation.” Repeat for each new chat.
Regardless of what platform you use, your task is to spend at least fifteen uninterrupted minutes trying to solve the problem independently. During these fifteen minutes, you should not check email, slack, or any other form of digital media, but instead focus your entire attention to solving the problem. After these fifteen minutes, make use of the tutor to understand next steps as necessary.
