Configuration Notes

Go to the bottom of this page for my latest (Thursday) "letter".

Forget about the stuff with the shift key for reloading -- with your version (1.xx) of Netscape you should just be able to use the reload icon by itself to force a reload.

I think your version of netscape doesn't know about tables -- that's why my home page is all in one long line.

Netscape Mail

Here is a bunch of stuff on how to get and use the 2.02 version of netscape, which has a mail sending capability.

The "gold" 2.02 version of netscape is about 4 megabytes. The name of the file is g32e202.exe. I'm not absolutely sure this is the right version for your PC. The SuperNet instructions say to download it into a temporary location because it "has its own Windows setup routine". Then we may need to figure out where your current version of netscape is located and then we can install this one there as well. The current version may be called ns16-100.exe

The SuperNet directions on how to configure your PC for netscape is here.

You might visit this web sight and see if you can read it -- I can't really see some of the pictures very well on my screen. Also you'll notice it goes into a lot of detail -- I will try to digest some of this and come up with a synopsis.

Supernet also has information about using netscape under WIN95 here. This includes information about using netscape for doing ftp, which we talked about over the phone.

Once you get the new version of netscape up, you need to configure it-- here are the instructions SuperNet sent me via email:

"In order to receive mail in Netscape, you must have the mail and news preferences set properly. Here are the settings:

Under `Servers':

SMTP: mailrelay.csn.net
POP: lynx.csn.net
UserName: Put the login name here
NNTP: news-2.csn.net

Now you should be ready to read your mail."

Finally here are my own rather lame instructions on how to read mail with netscape:

How to read mail in netscape 2.0

1. Go to the window pulldown menu. The first item in the pulldown should be Netscape Mail.

2a. If not, you have an old version of Netscape. 2b. If so, click on Netscape Mail. A window should popup. Position this window on your screen.

3. Now click on the "inbox" item on the left side of this new window.

4. You may also need to click on the "Get mail" icon just above this. (i.e. in the upper left hand corner)

5. Now your received mail should appear to the right.

6. To read a letter, just click on it. To reply to a letter, click on it so that its highlighted, and then click on the "Re:All" icon at the top of the window. A send mail window pops up with Mail-To part filled out. Write something in the body and hit the "send" icon.

... While I was writing this I talked to Ying, a student here, who has Windows 95 and is using Netscape 2.0 through a PPP connection. There is now a 3.0 beta version of netscape.
