Infrastructure for Collaborative Faculty Textbook Communities
PI: Karen L. Karavanic (PSU)
Co-PI: Remzi H. Arpaci-Dusseau (Univ of Wisconsin - Madison)

The cost of textbooks is a major concern across campuses today. Many open questions remain regarding the best practices and the funding model for development and offering of Open Educational Resources. Many efforts are ad hoc: there is a strong risk of duplication of effort, and decreased utility of the materials as they age. The goal of this project is to develop infrastructure useful for sharing domain-specific course materials with collaborating Computer Science faculty across the world sharing expertise in a particular domain.

Prof. Karavanic is developing a new online textbook, Introduction to Performance Measurement, Modeling and Analysis. This will serve as a test vehicle for the new infrastructure, as both are developed concurrently. PSU students will help to refine the textbook contents in the Winter 2007 course: CS410/510 Introduction to Performance Measurement, Modeling and Analysis.
