Long Distance Wireless Links

  • Problems with long distance and the 802.11 MAC
    • Carrier sense is meaningless when propagation delay is large
      • collision probability increases dramatically
    • Immediate acknowledgement adds 1 round trip time to every packet delivery
    • RTS/CTS, if used, adds another round trip time to every burst of packets

  • Solution for point-to-point links:
    • Full duplex 802.11
      • 2 wireless cards on each end
      • 1 transmitter, 1 reciever with separate antennas
