3. Multimeter Demo, Breadboarding an LED Circuit, Resistor Color Codes

Class meeting on 3, 4 October 2011

Homework: Homework 2

Learning Objectives

  1. Be able to use your multimeter to measure voltage and resistance
  2. Be able to build circuits of resistors on the breadboard from the Sparkfun Inventor's Kit
  3. Be able to write an Arduino program to make an LED blink

Notes and Supplemental Files

  1. Download the PowerPoint presentation or the 3-up version of the notes on using a multimeter and a breadboard

Quiz 1

Quiz 1 will cover Electricity, Ohm's Law, and the basic structure of an atom

Multimeter Demo

Sparkfun has a multimeter tutorial that fills in a lot of additional material not covered in the class notes.

Adafruit tutorials on getting started with Arduino

Limor Fried (a.k.a. Lady Ada) has created some very nice and very helpful tutorials on getting started with Arduino. If you are having trouble getting your Arduino running, have a look at Tutorial 0: Getting Ready and Tutorial 1: Let There Be Blink. Those tutorials are helpful even if you are not having trouble getting started.

Resistor Color Codes

Resistor values are indicated by a series of stripes on the resistor. The following diagram shows how to interpret the meaning of the color stripes.
