Bulletin Description

Experimental laws, network theorems, and computer analysis techniques of electrical circuit analysis. Network responses to various forcing functions using time-domain and phasor-domain methods.

Prerequisite: Mth 253.

Course Outcomes

1. Ability to apply basic laws to resistive circuits.
2. Ability to perform mesh and nodal analysis.
3. Ability to apply circuit theorems.
4. Ability to analyze linear circuits containing operational amplifiers.
5. Ability to analyze first-order circuits.
6. Ability to use phasors for steady-state sinusoidal circuit analysis.

Assessment

Homework:	10% (completeness only)
Quizzes:	15% (best 6 of 8)
Exam 1:	25% (10% if Exam 2 score is better than Exam 1 score)
Exam 2:	25% (40% if Exam 2 score is better than Exam 1 score)
Final Exam:	25%

Grading

If a curve is used to determine the final grades, the cutoff for each letter grade will not be higher than the typical cutoffs listed below.

Miscellaneous

• You are also encouraged to purchase a high-end scientific calculator such as the HP 48, HP 49, TI 89, TI Voyage 200. These are invaluable for manipulating complex numbers, solving multiple linear equations, solving nonlinear equation for a single variable, and evaluating common equations. These are well worth the time and money and will serve you well throughout your courses in engineering. You will be allowed to use your calculators on exams for ECE 221, but not for ECE 222 or 223.
• The lectures this quarter will be video taped in case you miss class or wish to review some of the material. The lectures will also be available for online viewing on the web site.
• Copying or cheating in any way will result in a zero for the test or assignment, may receive an F for the course, and may be reported to the administration.

Homework

• You are encouraged to work together on the homework problems.
• Homework will be graded based on effort, not correctness. You are responsible for checking your answers against the solutions to make sure you understand the material.
• Homework solutions will be posted on the class web site (password protected).
• Late homework will not be accepted.

Exams

• Exams questions will be similar to homework problems and problems on exams from previous terms
• Please put cell phones and pagers on vibrate and turn off completely during exams. You may receive a call during lecture, but please step out of the room to minimize the disturbance.
• All exams are closed book but you are allowed to use a calculator and several sheets of notes. On each of the midterm exams you are allowed to use a single-sided sheet of notes. For the final you are allowed two single-sided sheets of notes.
• Make up exams will only be given if arranged at least 48 hours in advance.
