Parts of Speech

Part of Speech Description
abbreviation: A word or phrase that is shorten to conveniently represent the the longer, complete form.
acronym: An abbreviation of several words in such a manner that the abbreviation itself forms an apparent word.
adjective: A word that modifies or describes the features of a noun.
adverb: A word that modify an adjective, a verb, or another adverb.
classifier: A morpheme or word placed before a noun or numeral designating measurable or counting object. For example, a 'school' of fish or a 'dozen' eggs.
conjunction: A word or pharse that connects two parts of a sentence.
definite article: A word that belongs to a class of determiners that particularizes or restricts a noun. The English word 'the' is a definte article.
determiner: A word that belongs to a group of noun modifiers, including definite articles, demonstratives, and possesive adjectives.
exclamation: A forceful utterance or involuntary expression of pain, fear, or excitement.
form of address: A word that you use to politely refer to a person when talking to or about them, like sir, miss, or madam.
idiom: A word or phrase or expression unique to a given language.
imperative: A word that relates to or constitutes the mood that expresses a command or request.
interjection: A standalone word that expresses the immediate emotion or feeling of the speaker.
interrogative: A word or form used to ask a question, like who, what, when, where, why, and how.
intransitive verb: A verb that does not require an object.
modal: A verb that is characteristically used with one or more other verbs to express tense or mood. Another term for modal is an auxiliary verb.
name: A word that is used to uniquely identify a person, place, or thing.
no translation (n/a): This word does not have a direct translation between languages.
noun: A word that is a person, place, thing, or notion.
number: A word that represents a number, like one, two, three, four, and five.
onomatopoeia: A word that imitates the actual sound to which it refers.
particle: A word that has a grammatical function, but does not distinctly belong to one of the other major categories of speech. Many particles are unique to a specific language and cannot be directly translated to another language.
phatic: A word or phrased used to share emotions or establish a social mood rather than communication information.
phrasal verb: A verb formed from two or more parts, usually with another verb, adverb, or preposition.
phrase: A sequence of words intended to have meaning.
prefix: An affix attached to the front of a word to produce an inflected form or derivation.
preposition: A word that shows a relationship between its object and some other word in a sentence.
pronoun: A word that is used in place of a noun or noun phrase, like he or she.
qualifier: A content word that qualifies or modifies the meaning of a verb or noun.
quantifier: A word that expresses a quantity.
slang: A kind of word that can be construed as playful or casual or even rude and is peculiar to a specific language.
title: A word that precedes a person's name and describes that person's position or status or relationship with you and/or other people, like Mr. or Mrs.
transitive verb: A verb that requires an object.
unknown: An entry in the dictionary that has not been categorized yet.
verb: A word that describes an action, existence, or occurrance in a sentence. In this case, the word can be either transitive or intransitive.
vulgar: A word that is offensive, lewd, or profane in speech.
