The instructor is the contact point for everything related to homework.
This course is an introduction to the study of programming languages. It presents both general principles and specific details about the definition, implementation and use of historical and contemporary languages. It combines both theory and application of programming language features. Diverse programming paradigms, such as functional, logic and object-oriented, will be discussed in class and used in exercises.Format
Regular lectures. Weekly assigned readings. Weekly homework including programming assignments. Midterm and final exams.Goal
Understanding, learning, and analyzing, in a disciplined and comprehensive way, concepts inherent to programming languages. Knoledge of key issues and goals in the design, implementation and use of programming languages. Some literacy in programming languages. Ability to code a problem into a program using different programming paradigms.Notes
The expected preparation is a bachelor degree in Computer Science or equivalent background.Course materials
CS558 is a required course for the MS and PhD degrees in Computer Science and it is the foundation of several other graduate courses. Students are encouraged to take CS558 early in their program of study.

Assignments, midterm and final exams will contribute approximately 15%, 35%, and 50% of the grade, respectively. You will get an A with more than 80% total points and a B with 60% to 80% total points.
