This course is an introduction to the study of programming languages. It presents both general principles and specific details about the definition, implementation and use of historical and contemporary languages. It combines both theory and application of programming language features. Diverse programming paradigms, such as functional, logic and object-oriented, will be discussed in class and used in exercises.Format
Regular lectures. Weekly assigned readings. Weekly homework including programming assignments. Midterm and final exams.Goal
Understanding, learning, and analyzing, in a disciplined and comprehensive way, concepts inherent to programming languages. Knowledge of key issues and goals in the design, implementation and use of programming languages. Some literacy in programming languages. The expected preparation is a bachelor degree in Computer Science or equivalent background.Course materialsCS558 is a required course for the MS and PhD degrees in Computer Science and it is the foundation of several other graduate courses. Students are encouraged to take CS558 early in their program of study.
In addition to personal equipment, all the students are expected to have a departmental computer account. See http://www.cat.pdx.edu/ for obtaining the account.

- Textbook Kenneth C. Louden, Programming Languages: Principles and Practice, 2nd ed., Thomson Brooks/Cole, 2003.
- Video streams, when available, are in directory sirius.cs.pdx.edu:/stash/antoy. You need a CS account. Look at the readme for information on playing a video. There is a noticeable delay between video and audio due to a bug in the software.

Assignments, midterm and final exams will contribute approximately 25%, 30%, and 45% of the grade, respectively. You will need at least 80% of the points for an A and at least 60% for a B.
