Ethical Decisions in Oryx and Crake
In this activity we will apply the lessons we learned applying
ethical principles and decision making to several of the characters
from the book Oryx and Crake.
- Break into small groups of 3 or 4 students.
- Choose a character from the book. Good choices might include
- Jimmy
- Jimmy's mother
- Jimmy's father
- Oryx
- Crake
- Pick an incident from the book where the character must make a
choice or decision that requires ethical reasoning.
- Create a document that includes
- The character
- The choice
- An ethical principle the character may have used
- Evidence from the book that supports your reasoning
Be sure the reasons and evidence you use meet the 3
guidelines for moral reasoning.
- Moral reasoning must be logical
- Factual evidence cited to support a person’s judgment should be accurate, relevant, and complete
- Ethical standards used should be consistent
- Report back to the class
